Free iPad iPhone iPod Touch Jailbreak Support > I just downloaded the firmware zip and when I tried to browse for the file i couldn't find anything that would open in redsnow

Am i supposed to click on a file within the zip to start redsnow or can i browse when redsnow is already open?

Hi Daniel,

Which device do you have? Which firmware/version? Windows or mac?

Thanks!

September 20, 2011 | Registered CommenterLuke Abell

I guess that info would be helpful. iPhone 4 firmware is 4.3.5 and the computer I am using to try the jailbreak is a windows 7 machine

Ok,

When you download the firmware file, it's extension should be ".ipsw".

Have you tried clicking the browse button in redsn0w and navigating to that file?

September 20, 2011 | Registered CommenterLuke Abell

I didnt see any ipsw files at all in the file i downloaded. I extracted the file to my desktop, do you know what folder it is located within the zip file?

September 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdaniel z

Ah, sorry. Make sure you download the IPSW along with redsn0w. It is 2 separate downloads. There should be a link to the file underneath of the link to download redsn0w. (on the how to jailbreak page)

iPhone3,1_4.3.5_8L1_Restore- is the name of the zip file i downloaded and within it is a firmware folder. under the firmware folder are some DMG files and K48 some PLIST files a N90. Within the firmware folder are 2 more folders named all_flash and DFU theres a BBFW file in the firmware folder. Clicking through the all flash folder gets to some img3 files and in the dfu folder there are 2 dfu files....

hmmmm, i guess i missed that part..... boy do i feel dumb

September 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdaniel z

Whoops! I guess the browser you are using turned it into a zip. Try renaming the .zip to.ipsw

September 20, 2011 | Registered CommenterLuke Abell

The download firmware link only brings up the zip i already have.....

September 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdaniel z

I guess I have to re download it not as a zip i guess

September 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdaniel z

What browser are you using?

September 20, 2011 | Registered CommenterLuke Abell

internet explorer, should I try a different one?

September 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdaniel z

Well it should work fine with Internet explorer. If it downloads as a zip, rename the end of it to .ipsw

September 20, 2011 | Registered CommenterLuke Abell

I renamed the zip .ipsw and still nothing, it still wants me to navigate foldwers within the zip.....

September 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdaniel z

try using another browser-

download this one: http://www.google.com/chrome

September 20, 2011 | Registered CommenterLuke Abell

I redownloaded the file from IE and on the DL options I switched from zip to all files and renamed it to ipsw looks like that worked

Sweet, thanks again for the prompt and awesome help!

September 20, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdaniel z

Hi, you cant really save your jailbreak, once you restore you will kill the jailbreak and just have a stock idevice, you can BACKUP your cydia installs, tweaks and everything using a cydia package called "PKGbackup". You need to purchase it in cydia, think it is $7.99 but well worth it IMO. Once you have backed up using this package, the next time you restore and jailbreak, redownload it from cydia and you will be able to use the backup to have all your cydia packages put back on your device. NOTE: make sure if you restore you are able to jailbreak on whatever firmware is currently being signed by apple ;)
