Try finding a winterboard theme that customizes the sms background instead.

I went onto cydia and searched sms and I've gotten the Sms retina yellow flower, dark painting, and SMS BLACK (but it is a whole theme) to work through winterboard. Also, the sms retina bubbles also work for changing the sms texting bubble color

I have no experience with the "SMS Background" cydia tweak, but if you install winterboard you can easily replace the text background yourself with a custom theme.
You need a way to access the files on your phone. Either something like iFile or (my preference) iPhoneBrowser, which is free. With iPhoneBrowser, you plug your device into your computer, then load the app. done.
Whatever you're using, browse to "Library>Themes". Create a folder inside named "Awesomeness.theme" (you could name it something besides Awesomeness, but why would you? :)
Upload the background image you want to use into your new folder, and name the file SMSBackground.png
(make sure the image is in PNG format, obviously, and use the proper sized image: 320x480 for old devices and 640x960 for the 4/4s retina display).
Open winterboard, choose the Awesomeness theme, restart springboard, and you're done.
Notes:
No, it is not necessary to restart your device in order for the new theme to be visible, unless Winterboard was already loaded into memory.
You can use your custom theme in conjunction with other winterboard themes. Just make sure your theme is listed on top of any others you have loaded, in case those have SMS backgrounds you don't want to use.
Simple.

Also: as other people mentioned, if you don't have a specific image in mind you can also just browse winterboard themes on cydia and find one with an SMS background you like.

so i downloaded the tweak "desktop/sms background' thru cydia, and apparently its meant to be used so you can change you sms background. you are meant to go to setting->wallpaper and chose a pic and there should be an "i" on the left n right hand side before you set the photo. left for messages right for normal background.
however mine isnt like that at all i dont have the "i" on either side
has anyone ever had this problem
im on a iphone 4s running 5.1.1
